Driver Safety During the Holidays

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

The holiday season is upon us! During this time of year, there’s a lot of “more”. We are spending more time with friends and family, eating more, spending more, attending more parties, and overall more celebrating.

However, what goes along with all of those more’s is also more cars and more driving. Whether it’s to our friend’s house across town or our parent’s house across the state, people will be hitting the road to get places. AAA predicts that 49.3 million travelers will hit the road this Thanksgiving season alone.

This holiday season remember to celebrate responsibly

With more cars on the road, and the overall stress of this busy holiday season, it is especially important to stay alert and drive safely. Remind your teen drivers of the safe habits they’ve been learning to be a defensive driver and to always expect the unexpected. And be sure to remember them yourself! It’s easy to get caught up rushing to places and forget the basic safety habits like turn signals, scanning, and speed limits.

Also during this season, drinking and driving is a greater concern. With more parties and celebrations, you’ll probably be drinking more. But remember to think twice before getting behind the wheel when you’re ready to go home. The MADD Tie One On Campaign encourages us to designate a sober driver for all of our holiday festivities. There are other options as well. With Uber and Lyft, there is never a reason to get behind the wheel if you can’t function at your highest level.

From my family to yours - have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Stay safe out there!
