What if driving lessons with your teen didn't have to be filled with yelling, bickering, and stress?

They don't have to be.

The Parent's Guide to Teen Driving

a step-by-step video course for parents

Believe it or not, there is an entire set of skills every driver needs to learn in order to be a successful, defensive driver.

And it's not what most parents think of when their teen starts driving.

As a professional driving coach who has worked with thousands of teen drivers and their parents, I know what it takes to give teens the confidence to become safe, skilled drivers and what it takes to give their parents the right tools to help them get there.

The Parent’s Guide to Teen Driving is the tool all parents of teen drivers need. I developed this course just for parents because:

  • Even as a Behind the Wheel driving instructor, I know that parents will handle the majority of their teen’s practice time.

  • I know that many parents are nervous about coaching their teen behind the wheel, and I want to support them with practical techniques that work.

Teens have the best chance at becoming safe drivers when they receive consistent instruction and messaging from all their adult coaches.

What Most Parents Are Missing When it Comes to
Behind the Wheel Lessons with Their Teen Driver

As an experienced driver yourself, you may be thinking all about the technical actions involved in driving. You can easily show your teenager where to put their hands, how to manage their feet, and what to do before they press on the gas pedal.

You might even be anticipating all the mistakes they are likely to make as they begin learning to drive. No one knows how hard to push on the brake until they feel the car stop for the first time!

What most parents are missing, though, is that they need to teach their teen driver about awareness and risk throughout every single driving lesson.

Your risk assessment mechanism is hard-coded at this point in your driving life. Your teen’s doesn’t even exist yet!

The Parent’s Guide to Teen Driving is all about teaching you - the parent - how to teach your teen driver:

  • To become aware of risks

  • To learn how to stay alert, continuously monitoring the road

  • To respond safely in every situation rather than reacting out of fear

  • To develop habits of awareness that promote safety behind the wheel

  • To become confident, safe, and defensive drivers for a lifetime

And we’re going to make sure you can teach it all while remaining calm and confident in your ability to get your teen’s driving journey off to a great start.

I liked that they were short and sweet and full of practical tips. Parents can easily find time to watch these videos at some point during their busy days. And, I like that these point out things that parents don't necessarily think about, especially the video about explicitly teaching the student driver where he or she should be looking.

- Jenn G.

The length is great - content is concise and to the point, with one focus per video = effective learning design. The mix of you talking and the images of cars and driving scenes is engaging. The one about getting pulled over was really useful: put down both windows - I didn't know that! You are natural and engaging as a speaker, and you balance credibility with warmth/empathy, which is perfect for a coach and would be a great model for the parents watching these.

- Michelle B

The logical steps… that as parents with busy lives and multiple kids… just forget and assume are being taken care of. Todd’s style shows confidence that reassures the parents that by watching these videos… that they have to stay involved with their teen driver.
